Jin Shin Jyutsu ®

What is Jin Shin Jyutsu ?

Jin Shin Jyutsu ® Physio-Philosophy (JSJ) is a gently applied yet very powerful energy balancing system. It helps the body to return to a harmonious state and is helpful in relieving physical and emotional conditions.

JSJ balances the lifeforce energy in the body. Because JSJ comes from Japan we call this energy ki, but the Chinese call it chi, the Indians prana etc. It is known that systems which deal with the body’s energy - acupuncture for example - were fully developed medical systems over 5000 years ago. The Kojiki (Record of Ancient Things – Japan 712AD), housed in the archives of the Imperial Palace in Japan contains the earliest written records of JSJ. It states JSJ was widely known before the birth of Buddha and before the birth of Moses.! The art was revived by Master Jiro Murai in Japan at the start of the 20th century. It was taken to the US by his long-term student Mary Burmeister in the 50s. There are now many practitioners and students around the world. For more information you can visit:

What kinds of conditions can JSJ help ?

JSJ can help anything and everything. It is a physio-philosophy which means it is effective on medical conditions in the physical body, but is also a philosophy-first system of how to live your life. Some examples of conditions which I personally have seen greatly improved with JSJ are as diverse as Back conditions, Post natal depression, Stress and Panic attacks, Insomnia, Ovarian Cysts, Autism, Migraines, IBS, Pneumonia, Sinusitis, Tumours and Food Allergies .. it can even be used for cosmetic projects such as facelifts. JSJ is also known to be helpful for fertility problems and is benefical during and after pregnancy.

JSJ is an adjunct and partner to western medicine. A great example of this would be that if you had a broken bone you would go to a doctor to have it set, then see a Jin Shin Practitioner to help it heal more quickly.

JSJ can be used to help the body cope with ‘treatments’ and is particularly powerful pre- and post- surgery to help the body to heal. It  can also be given to children post-vaccination to decrease the risk of side effects.

Is JSJ good for “well” people ?

The JSJ philosophy is based around the belief that illness comes from 'attitude' in the body – whether that be fear, sadness or grief, worry, anger or just putting too much effort into life. The reason for maintaining JSJ is to keep the body harmonised to prevent the physical manifestation of illness…  so JSJ is for everyone. The aim of JSJ in well people is to prevent future illness and keep the mind, body and spirit in balance.  Most practitioners have regular sessions themselves and use self help exercises to maintain  their well being.

It is actually a shame that most people find JSJ when they are already unwell, as regular use of the art can reduce stress and prevent illness in the first place.

JSJ also helps to move us from where we are 'stuck' in terms of patterns of behaviour or beliefs that are holding us back from being fully empowered.

What happens in a JSJ session ?

When you come for your session you will be asked to lie down on massage table face up. You remain fully clothed, so wear anything you feel comfortable in. After some discussion and examination of your posture I will listen to the pulses at your wrist as they assist me in hearing how to harmonise the energy in your body. I will then hold various combinations of points in your body over the top of your clothing. Most people find the session extremely relaxing and it is quite normal to fall asleep.

What do I need to do prior to my JSJ session ?

The only recommendation I have is that where possible you don’t have a heavy meal just prior to your session. It is better if the body can focus on the JSJ rather than the digestive processes.

How long is a JSJ session ?

The actual hands on session itself lasts anywhere from 40 minutes to an hour and is dependent on how the body is reacting in the session. Sessions with children are generally shorter. After the session there is time for some discussion and for me to provide you with some “self help” or homework, so allow 90 minutes for your first session, and 75 minutes  for the following sessions

How many sessions will I need ?

My recommendation is that no matter what your ‘project’ you should come for your first three sessions within the time frame of a week to 10 days. This really helps to make and maintain some changes. Once these sessions have been completed a further course of action can be decided jointly. Generally sessions would become further apart, and eventually you might choose to come for regular sessions weekly, fortnightly or monthly to maintain your feelings of well being. Other people prefer to use self help exercises (see below) at home to keep themselves harmonized.

Of course the number of sessions required depends on a large range of factors. In general if the project is chronic or more pronounced you would probably need to commit to at least 10 sessions fairly close together.

Other chronic conditions such as migraines require a regular but less intense commitment to JSJ over a period of time.

How much do sessions cost ?

Session can be paid for separately or as a package. Click here for session and pricing information.

 What about Self Help ?

The power of JSJ is that you yourself can learn to keep yourself and your family well and happy. After your JSJ sessions you will be given self help “homework” to aid the harmonising of your project. There are also many self help “flows” which are great for maintaining your well being. You might like to try the Main Central flow from the Jin Shin Jyutsu website which is a great flow to do every day.

At various times during the year I will be holding some self help workshops where we can all learn the various ways to help the body and deal with specific conditions like fever and headache. I am also planning to hold a workshop for children.
